Does hosting the Olympics, the World Cup or other major sports events really pay off?

Ivan Savin, ESCP Business School

After a long battle, Paris’s beloved bouquinistes will be staying put this summer. The decision, announced on 13 February by the French government, came after considerable public backlash to the police prefecture’s original plan to move part of the iconic Seine booksellers elsewhere for the inauguration of the Olympics Games on 26 July.

Meanwhile, less than six months away from the event, Parisians continue to grumble over a lack of consultations with locals, warnings of gridlocked traffic, closed metro stations, extensive video surveillance and other grievances. So for host countries, what was the point of the Olympics, again?

In academia, the debate about the potential positive and negative effects of large-scale sporting events is ongoing. Although these events are often associated with substantial economic losses, the long-term benefits are the main argument in favour of hosting them. These include the development of material and soft infrastructure such as hotels, restaurants or parks. Big games can also help put the host region on the map as an attractive place for sports and cultural events, and inspire a better entrepreneurial climate.

The pros and the cons of big sporting events?

The cost of these benefits, as the Parisians have realised, is steep. Host countries appear to suffer from increased tax burdens, low returns on public investments, high construction costs, and onerous running cost of facilities after the event. Communities can also be blighted by noise, pollution, and damage to the environment, while increased criminal activity and potential conflicts between locals and visitors can take a toll on their quality of life. As a result, in the recent past several major cities, including Rome and Hamburg, withdrew their bids to host the games.

A common feature of the economics of large-scale sporting events is that our expectations of them are more optimistic than what we make of them once they have taken place. Typically, expenditure tends to tip over the original budget, while the revenue-side indicators (such as the number of visitors) are rarely achieved.

When analysing the effect of hosting large-scale sporting events on tourist visits, it is important to take into consideration both the positive and negative components of the overall effect. While positive effects may be associated with visitors, negative effects may arise when “regular” tourists refuse to visit the location due to the event. This might be because of overloaded infrastructure, sharp increases in accommodation costs, and inconveniences associated with overcrowding or raucous or/and violent visitors. On top of that, reports of poverty or crime in the global media can actually undermine the location’s attractiveness.

When big sporting events crowd out regular tourists

In an article published in the Journal of Sports Economics with Igor Drapkin and Ilya Zverev, I assess the effects of hosting large-scale sporting events, such as Winter and Summer Olympics plus FIFA World Cups, on international tourist visits. We utilise a comprehensive dataset on flow of tourists covering the world’s largest destination and origin countries between 1995 and 2019. As a first step, we built an econometric model that effectively predicts the flow of tourists between any pair of countries in our data. Subsequently we compared the predicted tourist inflow in a hypothetical scenario where no large-scale sporting event would have taken place with the actual figures. If the actual figures exceed the predicted ones, we consider the event to have a net positive impact. Otherwise, we consider that it had a “crowding out” effect on “regular” tourists. While conducting this analysis, we distinguished between short-term (i.e., focusing just on the year of the event) and mid-term (year of the event plus three subsequent years).

Our results show that the effects of large-scale sporting events vary a lot across host countries: The World Cup in Japan and South Korea 2002 and South Africa 2010 were associated with a distinct increase in tourist arrivals, whereas all other World Cups were either neutral or negative. Among the Summer Olympics, China in 2008 is the only case with a significant positive effect on tourist inflows. The effects of the other four events (Australia 2000, Greece 2004, Great Britain 2012, and Brazil 2016) were found to be negative in the short- and medium-term. As for the Winter Olympics, the only positive case is Russia in 2014. The remaining five events had a negative impact except the one-year neutral effect for Japan 1998.

Following large-scale sporting events, host countries are therefore typically less visited by tourists. Out of the 18 hosting countries studied, 11 saw tourist numbers decline over four years, and three did not experience a significant change.

The case for cautious optimism

Our research indicates that the positive effect of hosting large-scale sporting events on tourist inflows is, at best, moderate. While many tourists are attracted by FIFA World Cups and Olympic games, the crowding-out effect of “regular” tourists is strong and often underestimated. This implies that tourists visiting for an event like the Olympics typically dissuade those who would have come for other reasons. Thus, efforts to attract new visitors should be accompanied by efforts to retain the already existing ones.

Large-scale sporting events should be considered as part of a long-term policy for promoting a territory to tourists rather than a standalone solution. Revealingly, our results indicate that it is easier to get a net increase in tourist inflows in countries that are less frequent destinations for tourists – for example, those in Asia or Africa. By contrast, the United States and Europe, both of which are traditionally popular with tourists, have no single case of a net positive effect. Put differently, the large-scale sporting events in Asia and Africa helped promote their host countries as tourist destinations, making the case for the initial investment. In the US and Europe, however, those in the last few decades brought little return, at least in terms of tourist inflow.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. "You can't make this up": Project hosts mocked for trainwreck interview

The Project hosts have found itself in a storm of laughter and tears after a trainwreck interview with an unfortunate Melbourne mum who was recently booted from a comedy show with her crying baby.

It all started innocently enough when a breastfeeding mother Trish Faranda found herself ousted from an Arj Barker comedy show because her seven-month-old bundle of joy was proving too distracting.

In a flurry of events that could rival a sitcom script, Faranda then embarked on a media tour to share her side of the story, which, let's just say, didn't exactly go as smoothly as a well-rehearsed stand-up routine.

On Monday night's episode of The Project, host Sarah Harris – in a moment that can only be described as a classic case of foot-in-mouth syndrome – hinted over the sounds of very loud crying that maybe baby Clara "can go to dad just for a quick second... a mum with three little kids, I reckon you need to laugh."

As Waleed Aly chuckled nervously in the background, social media exploded faster than a punchline at a comedy club, forcing The Project to quickly disable comments. However, viewers were quick to point out the hilarity of The Project's own struggle with disruptive babies, all while criticising Arj Barker for his comedic inconvenience.

“There’s something really really funny about The Project host asking for the baby to leave for being disruptive during the interview and then going right back to empathising with the mother about being asked to take her baby out during a comedy show for being disruptive,” posted one follower.

“Hilarious. The Project takes aim at comedian Arj Barker because he asked a mother/baby to leave & avoid disrupting a live show. At the 3 min mark Sarah Harris kicks the same baby off the air to avoid disrupting the show. You can’t make this up,” posted another.

“This is hilarious. Well done The Project and Sarah Harris for showing how distracting a whining baby can be when you’re trying to entertain people," wrote a third.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Project (@theprojecttv)

Meanwhile, over at A Current Affair, baby Clara once again stole the show, or rather, disrupted it entirely. The interview turned into a symphony of cries and babbling, leaving viewers wondering if they had accidentally tuned in to a sitcom pilot.

But let's not forget the man of the hour, Arj Barker himself, who stood by his decision to evict the tiny troublemaker from his comedy haven. In a series of radio interviews, Barker defended his actions, citing the sacredness of comedic timing and the sheer audacity of bringing an infant to a 15-plus comedy show.

In the end, amidst the laughter and the tears, one thing became abundantly clear: comedy, like life, is unpredictable. Whether it's a crying baby stealing the spotlight or a tone-deaf remark from a well-meaning host, one thing's for sure – you can always count on the unexpected.

Images: The Project

Australian Idol host opens up on painful health battle

Australian Idol host and singer Ricki-Lee Coulter has revealed that she has been battling endometriosis for over a decade.

The 38-year-old took to Instagram to share the process that led her diagnosis, straight from the hospital bed, following her laparoscopy and excision surgery.

"For over a decade I’ve been dealing with chronic pain that has progressively gotten worse,” she began the post.

“Anyone with endometriosis knows it takes a long time to get to the point where you have surgery and can get any kind of diagnosis — and that you have to advocate for yourself and keep pushing for answers.

“Over the years I have seen so many doctors and specialists, and have been down so many different paths to try to figure out what was going on — and for so long I thought the pain was just something I had to deal with.

“But the past couple of years, it has become almost unbearable and is something I’ve been dealing with every single day.

“I met with a new GP at the start of the year, who referred me to a new specialist, and we went through all the measures that have been taken to try to get to the bottom of this pain — and the only option left was surgery.

“So this week I had a laparoscopy and excision surgery — and they removed all the endometriosis they found, and I can only hope that is the end of the pain.

“I’m now at home recovering and feeling good. Rich is taking very good care of me xxx," she ended the post.

She also shared a few photos after her surgery, and of her recovering at home.

One in nine women suffer from endometriosis, a condition where the tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the womb, which sometimes moves to other areas of the body.

Friends and followers shared their support in the comments, with reality TV star and fellow endo-warrior Angie Kent saying: “Sending you lots of love! You’re not alone in this — it’s a marathon not a sprint, unfortunately.

“But there’s an amazing chronic invisible illness sista-hood out here! I hope you have a good support system with the recovery including an amazing women’s health practitioner.”

“Sending lots of love,” Sunrise host Natalie Barr added.

“Sending you so much love. Been where you are now and it gets so much better honey,” wrote Jackie O.

Images: Instagram

"It's a dummy spit": Ben Fordham slams Police Commissioner

Ben Fordham has slammed the NSW Police Commissioner for pulling the pin on a radio interview at the last minute, with the radio host claiming she was requesting "favourable coverage".

Karen Webb was set to appear on the 2GB radio show on Monday morning, after facing several months of public scrutiny due to a series of blunders.

“But the commissioner is not coming on our show this morning, (she) called me on Friday to explain this,” Fordham said to his loyal listeners.

He said she was not happy about a “cheeky” question he asked Premier Chris Minns earlier in the day, asking whether he had received her “letter of resignation”.

“It’s a dummy spit and it’s another example of the commissioner taking things personally instead of looking for the lesson,” he said.

Fordham went on to claim that Commissioner Webb had approached media executives to ask for "favourable coverage" before agreeing to be interviewed.

“The NSW Police Commissioner has approached media bosses at Nine Radio and NewsCorp. I know this because one of the conversations was about me,” Fordham said.

Fordham referred to the death of 95-year-old Clare Nowland, who was allegedly tasered by Senior Constable Kristian White at a Cooma aged care home in May 2023.

“When I was asking questions about the lack of transparency over the Taser incident, the commissioner complained to my boss,” Fordham said.

“It was clear to me what was going on, Karen Webb wanted me to ease up a bit.”

He added, “Morale in the police force is tanking, and the commissioner has gone into hiding.”

Pressure on the commissioner has increased since serving police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon was charged with the double murder of Sydney couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies in February.

Police allege he used a service weapon to kill the couple, prompting concerns over the force’s weapon handling protocols and leadership.

Ms Webb was noticeably silent in the days that followed Mr Lamarre-Condon being charged, and when she did finally face the cameras, she was slammed for a series of embarrassing blunders, including referring to the alleged murder as a “crime of passion” and quoting Taylor Swift lyrics when asked if she should resign.

William Shatner shocks hosts simply by revealing his age

In a world where time ticks mercilessly onward, one man has defied the very essence of ageing: the legendary William Shatner, the man who boldly went where no nonagenarian has gone before.

As Shatner prepares to celebrate his 93rd trip around the sun, fans worldwide are scratching their heads in disbelief. The reason? Well, it seems that Captain Kirk himself has stumbled upon the fountain of youth and decided to keep it all to himself.

The commotion started when Shatner made a guest appearance on the US Today Show, looking fresher than a daisy in springtime. Fans took to social media to express their shock, with one incredulous viewer commenting, "Damn, he's still sharp and has his hair. I would never have guessed 93." And another chimed in with, "I would've guessed 67 or 68."

Forget "live long and prosper"; it seems the new motto is "live long and confound the heck out of everyone".

Even the hosts of the Today Show were left flabbergasted by Shatner's youthful glow. They couldn't resist asking the man himself for his secret to longevity. And what pearls of wisdom did he impart? "Don't tell anybody [your age]." Ah, sage advice indeed. It seems the real secret to ageing gracefully is to maintain an air of mystery.

But let's rewind to 2021 when Shatner was grilled by a journalist about whether he'd had any "serious work" done. His response? A witty comeback, of course. "No, have you?" Touché, Shatner, touché. And when pressed further, he simply attributed his youthful appearance to good genes, lots of horseback riding and a healthy dose of bewilderment about the world.

Despite his apparent disdain for the number 90 ("It's disgusting," he once declared in an interview), Shatner finds himself hurtling towards the ripe old age of 93 with all the grace and poise of a starship navigating through a meteor shower. And if his recent TV appearance is anything to go by, he's showing no signs of slowing down.

So let's all take a leaf out of Shatner's playbook, shall we? If anyone asks for the secret to your eternal youth, just give them that trademark Shatner smirk and say: "It's classified."

Images: NBC | Wikimedia | Tik Tok

"We've all gone": Why Jackie O stormed off set

Jackie O Henderson has marched out of KIIS FM in the middle of The Kyle and Jackie O show, after finding out that the station has the highest gender pay gap disparity across Australian radio.

“Southern Cross Austereo has a disgraceful 5.9% pay gap. Why is Peter getting that much money? I’m so angry about that, it makes my blood boil,” Henderson replied.

She then left the studios with all her female colleagues.

“We’ve all gone,” she said.

"We are just here with the fellas. I don’t know whether I am enjoying this, bring the girls back!” Sandilands told listeners.

On Tuesday, the Workplace Gender Equality Agency published the gender pay gap for more than 5,000 Australian companies.

This was done after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ordered the information to be made public for the first time ever, so the data can be compared within and across industries.

The new data revealed that the national gap for total remuneration sits at 19 per cent and the median Australian female worker is taking home $18,461 less than their male counterpart.

Despite a few criticisms on Albanese's decision to publicise this data, Workplace Minister Tony Burke has said that releasing this data is effective.

“People on this side know that releasing that sort of data is effective and you will only find in the other side of politics anyone arguing that it is useless,‘’ he said.

“The days of secretly paying women less than men are now over.”

Images: Kyle and Jacki O Show

Popular American TV host Wendy Williams has shared her diagnosis after being plagued by "hurtful rumours".

The 59-year-old's medical team announced in a lengthy statement that she has been diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia: the same conditions actor Bruce Willis is battling.

The news comes after Williams' family confirmed she had checked in to a facility to treat cognitive issues.

“Questions have been raised at times about Wendy’s ability to process information and many have speculated about Wendy’s condition, particularly when she began to lose words, act erratically at times, and have difficulty understanding financial transactions,” her medical team said.

They said Williams' symptoms first began in 2023, and was diagnosed with the neurological conditions just weeks later after undergoing a series of tests.

Her team said both conditions have “already presented significant hurdles in Wendy’s life”.

“Wendy would not have received confirmation of these diagnoses were it not for the diligence of her current care team, who she chose, and the extraordinary work of the specialists at Weill Cornell Medicine,” they said.

“Receiving a diagnosis has enabled Wendy to receive the medical care she requires.”

Williams chose to share the news to “advocate for understanding” and to “raise awareness” for the difficult conditions.

“Unfortunately, many individuals diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia face stigma and misunderstanding, particularly when they begin to exhibit behavioural changes but have not yet received a diagnosis,” her team said.

“There is hope that with early detection and far more empathy, the stigma associated with dementia will be eliminated, and those affected will receive the understanding, support, and care they deserve and need."

“Wendy is still able to do many things for herself. Most importantly she maintains her trademark sense of humour and is receiving the care she requires to make sure she is protected and that her needs are addressed."

“She is appreciative of the many kind thoughts and good wishes being sent her way.”

The TV presenter has previously been open with her medical battle with Graves’ disease and lymphedema, as well as other significant challenges related to her health.

Kyle Sandilands abandons radio show after nasty accident

Kyle Sandilands was forced to abandon his daily radio show on Wednesday morning, after a nasty accident prevented him from heading into the studio.

KIISFM was forced to play a pre-recorded episode of the Kyle and Jackie O Show, as just moments before he was set to go on air, Sandilands took a tumble down the stairs.

Kyle took Thursday off the show as well to recover from his accident, but called in to speak to his co-host Jackie O to share what happened.

“I fell from the top of my internal staircase and rolled, rattled and bumped all the way to the bottom, and I was left splayed out like a Christmas dinner,” Sandilands said.

“It’s a big marble staircase, very wide and very long, and in some design flaw, the light [switch] is at the bottom, not at the top, it was pitch black and my foot went,” he added.

Sandilands said he was home alone at the time, with his wife Tegan Kynaston and their one-year-old son Otto spending the night away.

“So the normal routine wasn’t happening, the nanny wasn’t there because the baby wasn’t there, and the lighting situation wasn’t sorted out,” Sandilands said.

“I carry everything in [my] hat, my wallet, keys, cigarettes … That all went everywhere, and I was left at the bottom of the floor.”

“I was so injured I thought, ‘That’s it for me. This is the beginning of the end.’”

While he said he was left “rattled” by the accident, Sandilands went on to confirm he was doing “fine” now, and was hoping to be back on the air for Friday morning’s show.

Jackie O Henderson has big things planned for her 49th, as her co-workers surprised her with an extravagant custom birthday cake.

Her KIISFM team surprised the radio star with balloons and a yacht-shaped cake, topped with a fondant character wearing a bikini that resembled her on Wednesday.

Henderson also revealed that she had big things planned for her 49th, with a boat party scheduled for the weekend.

"I just feel like every single year of my life I have ignored birthdays and never wanted to do a party," she said.

"I just don't like doing it and I thought 'You know what? Why not! Like who cares how old you are or whether it's a milestone, I'm going to throw a big party on a boat.' So, it's the first time I've ever thrown a party for myself."

Jackie O looked younger than ever in a figure-hugging shirt and low-waist jeans, which she complimented with a simple glam look.

The radio host has been praised for her dramatic weight loss after losing an impressive 18kg in recent months.

She recently denied using Ozempic to achieve her slim figure and has insisted that she lost weight by going on WW (Weight Watchers), which she was an official ambassador for.

Images: KIISFM/ Instagram

Nat Barr and Shirvo announce new hosting gig

Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington have announced their new TV hosting gig.

The breakfast hosts are moving to prime time, as they prepare to welcome in the Christmas period with the annual Carols in the Domain.

Nat and Shirvo will be hosting the festive celebration, which will be broadcast nationally on Channel Seven on Saturday 23rd December from 7:30pm.

Barr hosted the event last year, but was joined by Shirvo's predecessor David Koch.

In a statement about hosting the Christmas event, Shirvo said he'd watched Carols in the Domain "with my family since I was a boy, so to now be on stage hosting for the first time is quite surreal."

He said that music plays an important role in his family Christmas, saying, “My sister, in the last few years and off the back of Covid where you weren’t allowed to sing or do anything together, decided that for the last couple of Christmases we all now have to do karaoke."

“It’s not strictly carols, it could quite literally be anything, and we tend to do that after lunch, when everyone’s had a couple of glasses of champagne, and feeling disinhibited — that’s when the karaoke microphone comes out!”

Shirvo added that he has attended the annual concert before, and is excited about the on-stage possibilities this year.

“I have been to Carols in the past, but never up on stage. So, who knows — anything could happen,” he said.

“I could be dressed up, I could be dressed down. I could be doing a singalong — at the end of the day, more than anything, Nat and I are just traffic cops, so we’ll just be throwing to the people that really matter — the performers and the performances.”

"It's pure joy and that's why Australians have loved it for so many years. I can't wait," added Barr.

Among the onstage talent on show this year are The Wiggles, Dami Im, Lucy Durack, Casey Donovan, Silvia Colloca, and many more.

Your family jewels must be epically large, mate. To Charles and Camilla, from me, Nick, the colony’s other privileged inbred, Merry Christmas!”

"The time's right": Neil Mitchell signs off

After 34 years on the air, 3AW radio veteran Neil Mitchell is signing off.

Neil Mitchell has been a staple of Australian radio for decades, growing a reputation for being fair, decent, honest and sometimes "a bit grumpy".

A Current Affair's Ally Langdon joined the 3AW veteran to reflect on a stellar career that earned him a legion of loyal listeners.

"I've always wanted to be a journalist from about age 14," he told Langdon.

"But not for a moment did I think that I would end up doing something such as I have, editing a newspaper and doing this."

His passion as a radio presenter lies in the "real people" who call in each morning, saying, "You can go from a person laughing and telling you jokes and carrying on to great stories."

"And then a couple of calls later there's somebody in tears that you need to help. It is real people."

"I regularly shed tears on air ... And if we can make a difference, I shed tears again because we've had success."

Over his decades on air, Mitchell clashed with many Aussie politicians, sharing how he took it upon himself to be a spokesperson for everyday Australians.

"They've established a system where they don't have to be accountable," he said.

"And [if] anybody attempts to make them accountable ... they resented it. Accountability is disappearing I'm afraid."

While he is stepping back from his flagship show, he has assured listeners he isn't signing off forever.

"I'll still be here. I'll be doing podcasts and all sorts of things. I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be an interesting change."

"I'm going to miss it, stepping away. But the time's right."

After four years as host of the 2GB Afternoons program, Deb Knight has been axed from the coveted role.

Knight's brutal dismissal comes after a noticeable decline in ratings, with Knight holding a mere six percent market share, as indicated by the latest radio ratings survey.

From January 15th next year, Deb will be replaced by Michael McLaren, as the 38-year-old presenter told Ben Fordham on on Thursday that he had "big boots to fill" but was excited to start the role.

"I am honoured to be doing it. There has been a rich and great legacy on 2GB for years and years on afternoons and most recently with Deb so it is big boots to fill," McLaren said.

"I am going to do my best."

The 38-year-old father added he is excited to bring his own niche interests and signature wit to the talkback show while covering the latest news and entertainment.

"We are going to do traditional afternoon radio, the open line will drive it," McLaren said.

"We will be across the news but we will also be across the entertainment things. My interests are sort of a little esoteric at times – I like the history stuff so we will have plenty of that."

"I am told I have a dry sense of humour so I will bring that hopefully to the table as well."

According to The Sunday Telegraph, Knight reportedly felt "shattered" after Nine Radio informed her earlier this month that she would be axed as host after her four year stint.

Knight was told of the decision just one week before the news was broken to the public, but shared that she would not be leaving the network for good, as she will be taking up a new role as the national host of Money News.

"I am stepping back as host of afternoons. I am not, however, leaving 2GB. In fact I'm taking on a new broader network role," she said.

"I have missed too many school drop offs and pick ups over the years, I do often put work first. So I'm very much looking forward to being able to be here a lot more for my family."

"I'm not myself": The real reason why Kyle Sandilands stormed off the show

Jackie O Henderson has revealed the real reason why her co-host, Kyle Sandilands, walked out just 11 minutes into their hit breakfast show on Tuesday morning.

The shock jock was nowhere to be seen on Wednesday, so Jackie O had to explain his absence.

One of their producers revealed that Sandilands had been "struggling with his shoulder."

"He sent me a message saying, 'Honey, I'm so sorry. I'm on medication and I'm not myself. I'm in so much pain," Henderson said.

"I actually feel so bad for him," admitted the radio star.

Sandilands had recently injured his rotator cuff and was prescribed Oxycodone to manage the pain.

A few of the side effects of using the painkiller can include light-headedness, confusion and unusual tiredness or weakness.

Henderson also admitted that she may have pushed him off the edge during their discussion about Covid-19 yesterday, as she had reportedly cussed him out.

"Calling him a c**ksucker was the turning point," she said.

Their argument had escalated into name-calling before Sandilands stormed out.

Sandilands had previously used the derogatory term to attack newsreader Brooklyn Ross, and he couldn't when his co-host used the same insult back at him.

This incident comes almost a week into the radio duo signing a record-breaking $200 million 10-year deal on air.

Image: Kyle and Jackie O Show/ Instagram
